The Swedish Dockworkers Union is the independent trade union for dockworkers
In the SDU, trade union tradition is renewed in a way that is only possible in an organization based on the members´ involvement.
The Swedish Dockworkers Union was founded in 1972. Since the start we have put internal democracy first. All important decisions on agreements and disputes are taken by the members affected, and the local branches are key in the organization. On a national level we provide education, giving opportunities for members from different parts of the country to meet. We also have the overall responsibility for contacts with the government.
Being the majority union in Swedish ports, we are able to coordinate support for each other when necessary.

European Dockworkers Council
The SDU is a member of the European Dockworkers Council, EDC. Dock workers’ unions from all over Europe gather here to collaborate on common issues.
The dismissal of vice-chairman Erik Helgeson is not a personal matter but an attack on our union
Following the interim decision from the Labour Court on December 17th, the SDU’s National Board have made clear that the union will never accept an order where the employers dictate who negotiates and speaks publically on behalf of the dockworkers. That decision is up to the membership alone, and they have already made their choice through democratic elections.
Therefore, the SDU has decided to employ Erik directly until the court case is finished next year. After that, the membership will decide on the formation of the future organisation. Whatever happens, Erik will carry out his responsibilities until the end of his term in 2028.
In order to strengthen our finances to absorb higher costs during this onslaught on our union activities and democratic rights, the union initiate an international fundraising campaign.
We are asking for support from fellow dockworkers and civil society to send a clear message to the port employers that union-busting will not pay off. We are many and we will not back down.
